Mukkalu pulusu doesn’t need any introduction to Andhra person, as it is commonly cooked recipe. Mukkala pulusu is basically a vegetable stew tangy and sweet. Out of the million ways of preparing mukkalu pulusu, today I came up with my grand mother’s version of making it.
I personally like this recipe as it has many vegetables added to it and is very easy to prepare. Pulusu is one such dish which gets tastier with time, it taste much better the next day. Tangy flavor and sweetness are nicely absorbed by the vegetables which makes them even tastier the next day.
Vegetables can be purchased from any produce market or Rythu Bazar. All the spices are easily available at any near by Indian grocery store.
So lets get started:
Tips for perfect Mukkalu Pulusu:
- Do not over cook the vegetables as they become mushy.
I have used few selected vegetables. Pumpkin, Brinjal, Drumsticks and Sweet potato can also be added to it.

Ingredients:
- Vegetables: 2 Cups cubed (Anapakay-Bottle gourd, Bendakay-Okra, Tomato, Carrot)
- Onions: 1 finely chopped
- Green chillies: 2 finely chopped
- Ginger : 1/2 inch finely chopped/grated
- Chintapandu(Tamarind)juice: 1 cup
- Water: 2 cups
- Jaggery: 3 Table spoons grated
- Curry leaves
- Oil: 1 table spoon
- Avalu(Mustard Seeds): 1/2 teaspoon
- Jeelakarra(jeera): 1/2 teaspoon
- Red Chilles: 2 no
- Garlic: 2 bulbs
- Salt: to taste
- Turmeric: 1/2 teaspoon
- Chilli powder: 1/2 teaspoon.
Procedure:
- In a pan, add oil. Once oil is hot add Mustard seeds. When they start spluttering add jeera, Curry leaves, Red chillies & Garlic.
- Add Onions and Green chillies. Saute them until onions turns soft.
- Add the cubed vegetables, mix well and close it with a lid. Let them cook for 10 minutes. Keep checking occasionally.
- Add salt, turmeric, chili powder, mix them.
- Add the Tamarind juice, water and jaggery. Mix everything well and close with a lid.
- Let it cook for about 15 minutes.
- Switch off the flame and transfer to a bowl.
- Serve hot with rice.

Tip:
I have tried it for hair fall and it worked wonders. Grate the pumpkin, add it to a blender, add 1 teaspoon curd 1/2 teaspoon honey and 1 tablespoon coconut oil/castor oil. Blend them to a fine paste. Apply it to hair and leave it for 30 minutes. Shampoo and condition.
